Betty Your Questions About Heels Without Heel

Betty asks…

How to reduce high heel pain when standing for long periods of time?

I have to wear heels for a new job and it requires me to stand for around 10 hours in heels which I never wear, whats the best way to minimise the pain. Wearing smaller heels or flats is not a possibility, a minimum of 2″ is required, and I have to keep the job as there’s a recession!!Thanks

Our pick of the answers:

Some general tips for selecting your shoes:
*Keep the heel height at 2″, no more, since you’re just starting to wear heels.
*Try on many pairs to find a comfy one, and don’t be afraid to spend a lot of time walking and just standing in them for a bit to make sure that they will work for you.
*If you don’t want a huge, chunky heel, consider a cone heel that tapers smoothly from the top to the bottom so it offers more support than a stiletto.
*Go with a nice closed-toe, closed-heel, simple pump, because frills like peep-toe holes and slingback straps can get irritating or need readjusting.

Some stores, including grocery stores, offer very small cotton socks that can be worn in heels without showing and I find that they make the insides of heels much comfier.

Also, you could try working heels into your repertoire more often to acclimatize yourself to wearing them. Maybe pick up a few pairs that are cheap (but good! Try Target, they often get in some quality heels), some shorter than 2″ if you want, some ~3″ just for wearing out when you won’t be walking far (to the movies or dinner, if you’re driving/being driven there–not out dancing, or anywhere that involves extensive walking).
